Allegations By Mr. Sherry Singh: Transparency Mauritius Calls For A Public Commission Of Inquiry Chaired By A Judge

Must Read

Transparency Mauritius has taken note of the statements made by the former CEO of Mauritius Telecom, Mr. Sherry Singh, on Radio Plus on 1 July 2022. These allegations go to the top of the state. They indicate, if true, totalitarian tendencies that translate into a desire to violate the rights of the citizen.

It would be important for Sherry Singh to provide additional accurate and detailed information about what he has alleged on the air. All information must be made fully public. This will be the best protection the former CEO of MT could have. The institutions of the Republic are almost all under the control of those close to the government and demonstrate a desire for absolute power.

Light must be shed on the allegations of Mr. Sherry Singh, but who will investigate if the institutions are infiltrated or locked up? The best option would be through a public commission of inquiry chaired by a judge and assessors appointed by the government and the opposition.

The scandals are piling up with the Kistnen, Wakashio, Angus Road, St Louis, SBM, fictitious jobs, torture of suspects by the police, the awarding of contracts to people close to the government during the pandemic, the billions paid for the termination of the Betamax contract, the control of horse racing, the management of the Bank of Mauritius, among others. Even the appointment of the Commissioner of Police has raised questions.

Transparency Mauritius reiterates its request to the Government to put in place a law to protect whistleblowers. Now, more than ever, is the time for such a law.
