Adani Stocks Dominate Funds Accountable For Single-Largest FPI Shareholder In Indian News Media House ‘NDTV’

Indian News Media House, NDTV was founded in 1984, by economist Prannoy Roy and journalist Radhika Roy. The duo currently holds 32.26% shares in the company. In August 2022, the Adani Group had acquired 29.18% stake in the company. The other single-largest shareholder beside Prannoy Roy, Radhika Roy and the Adani Group is Mauritius-registered foreign portfolio investor (FPI) LTS Investment Fund Ltd. LTS Investment Fund Ltd. bought a 9.75% stake in the quarter ending September 2016.

As published in an article by Indian News website, The Indian Express, an analysis of the LTS Investment Fund Ltd’s portfolio reveals that of the Rs 20,710.2 crore value of its shareholding as on June-end 2022 — the most recent quarter for which data is available — 97.78 per cent comes from Adani Group companies.

The break-up of LTS portfolio, as of Saturday:

  • Adani Power Ltd: Rs 1,692.3 crore
  • Adani Enterprises Ltd: Rs 6,475.1 crore
  • Adani Transmission Ltd: Rs 7,010.7 crore
  • Adani Total Gas Ltd: Rs 5,073.9 crore
  • NDTV Ltd: Rs 326.7 crore
  • Others: Rs 131.5 crore

Reports also suggest that Mauritius-based Vikasa India EIF I Fund is the second big FPI shareholder in NDTV with 4.42% stake. They acquired the stakes in the quarter ending September 2021.

It is to be noted that LTS Investment bought 9.75% stake in NDTV from Oswal Greentech. While on the other hand, Vikasa India EIF I Fund had acquired 4.42% stake from Mauritius-registered Eriska Investment Fund Ltd which, in turn, had bought it from Oswal Greentech in September 2016. Oswal Greentech’s 14.17% stake in NDTV that it acquired in December 2011 is currently being held by LTS Investment Fund and Vikasa India EIF I Fund.

Another Kolkata-based company, GRD Securities is also reported to have acquired 3.47% stake in NDTV in March 2016, around the same time that LTS Investment Acquired stakes in NDTV. Media reports also speculate that later, other entities with director linkages to GRD Securities also picked up NDTV shares. As per reports, on June 30, 2022, GRD Securities (2.8 % stake), Drolia Agencies (1.48 %), Adesh Broking (1.5 %) and Confirm Real Build (1.33 %), cumulatively hold 7.11 % stake in NDTV.

The Adani Group is currently aiming to acquire 26% more stakes in NDTV. The open offer acquisition will depend on existing investors tendering their shares at Rs 294 per share. The stock closed at Rs 515.1 on the Bombay Stock Exchange Friday.
