The Speaker of the National Assembly, Hon. Sooroojdev Phokeer, GCSK, GOSK, is leading a parliamentary delegation comprising Dr. Marie Christiane Dorine Chukowry, MP and PPS (Parliamentary Private Secretary) and Hon. Gilles Fabrice David, MP, to Rabat in the Kingdom of Morocco to participate in the 28th Africa Regional Assembly of the Assemblée Parlementaire de la Francophonie (APF), which started on Thursday and will end on 24 June 2022.
The work of this APF Africa Regional Assembly is based on the following themes –
- Democracy: crisis, challenges and issues for peace and stability in Francophone Africa, the role of Francophone parliamentarians;
- The Free Trade Area of Africa (FTAA), an opportunity for the integration and development of Africa;
- The participation of women in the political, economic and social life of French-speaking African States in the face of persistent challenges; and
- The effective involvement of parliamentarians from Francophone Africa in environmental and climate change issues.
The main concern of the Mauritian delegation at this Regional Assembly is the participation of women in the political, economic and social life of Francophone African States in the face of persistent challenges, since the effort to put women at the centre of development remains vital for sustainable development.
The second important theme for Mauritius as an island state is the environment and climate change for the implementation of laws and concerted actions in the Francophone space, the support and common collaboration of the Francophone African States to combat climate dangers for a better environment for humanity and the planet.
