A tragedy occurred in a nursery in Triolet this Wednesday morning of March 8. A baby of three and a half months was declared dead after being taken urgently to the Mediclinic of this village. This after the child was discovered with a trace of blood on his lip in his crib. The autopsy performed during the day attributed his death to asphyxiation due to aspiration of the contents of his stomach.
It is the director of this nursery, a 42-year-old woman who made a statement at the police station of Triolet to report the death of this baby. First she gave the history of her crèche which has been in existence for nine years and currently accommodates thirty-eight children, aged between three months and three years.
The admission of this male baby was made on February 23 by his mother who lives in the village of Pointe aux Piments. At no time was she informed if this child was suffering from any illness.
This Wednesday, March 8, at about 7:30 am, this baby was dropped off at the crèche and was in perfect health. At about 8:45 a.m., a babysitter gave him a bottle of milk. The child drank only twenty milliliters instead of one hundred. He didn’t want to drink more, according to the director. Three quarters of an hour after his burp, he fell asleep and was placed in his crib.
It was around 11:30 a.m. when another babysitter came to change his diaper that she noticed that he had a trace of blood on his lips. Accompanied by two employees of her nursery, the baby was taken to the Mediclinic of Triolet. First aid was provided by the doctor who unfortunately found him dead.
The body of this little one was then transported to the morgue of the Dr. A.G. Jeetoo Hospital, Port-Louis to be autopsied. The autopsy was performed by Dr Prem Chamane, Principal Police Medical Officer and has attributed the death to asphyxiation due to the aspiration of the contents of his stomach.
A police investigation has been opened into the case.
