6th Indian Ocean Conference: India Minister S Jaishankar Raises Concern Regarding Opaque Lending Practices

Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina inaugurated the two-day 6th Indian Ocean Conference (IOC) on Friday which aimed at strengthening cooperation among the countries of the region. This sixth edition of the conference at a city hotel, being organised by India Foundation in association with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Government of Bangladesh. Prithvirajsing Roopun attended the conference.

India minister Jaishankar gave a keynote address at the inaugural session of the two-day 6th Indian Ocean Conference in Dhaka says for India, he pledged for an effective and efficient connectivity to ASEAN. Prithvirajsing Roopun visited the Bangabandhu Memorial Museum to pay tribute to the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and his martyred family members.

India minister S Jaishankar on Friday discussed the significance of the Indo-Pacific region while addressing 6th Indian Ocean Conference in Dhaka. He highlighted the release of Bangladesh’s Indo-Pacific Outlook last month and said it underlines the widespread recognition of the concept of the Indo-Pacific. Stressing on the importance of respecting foundational regimes like the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), Jaishankar said it was essential for the credibility of the global order.

Indis foreign minister highlighted the concerns surrounding sustainable debt. Jaishankar pointed out that encouraging opaque lending practices, exorbitant ventures and price points that were unrelated to the market are “bound to bite back”.

He also outlined the importance of the Indian Ocean region to India’s national interests.

The meeting was also attended by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina of Bangladesh who urged for greater regional cooperation in promoting peace, prosperity and security in the Indian Ocean region.

Improving and enhancing connectivity should be the priority of the countries in the Indian Ocean region; and for India, a land connect to SouthEast Asia and a multi-model one to the Gulf and Central Asia could be challenging but the nations should work collectively for a smooth connectivity, Indian Foreign Minister S Jaishankar said on Friday.

“Let me underline, for India, an effective and efficient connectivity to ASEAN will be a game changer,” Jaishankar said in his keynote address at the inaugural session of the two-day 6th Indian Ocean Conference in Dhaka.

The Indian Ocean region has significant economic, political, and strategic implications for both the Indo-Pacific and African regions. With 64% of the global population and 60% of global GDP, it is a key area of interest for many nations.

The conference highlighted the growing importance of regional cooperation in addressing issues such as sustainable development, security and economic growth.
