Must Read

On Saturday 26 June 2021, Madagascar has celebrated the 61th anniversary of its independence ! An colorful party for all Malagasy and friends of Madagascar.

The stands and bleachers of the Barea Stadium has welcomed the public, on the occasion of the military parade for the 61th anniversary of the return to independence. This will be the first major popular mass organized by the state since Madagascar was affected by the coronavirus pandemic.

On June 26, 1960, Madagascar proclaimed its independence from France and the establishment of the Malagasy Republic.

A military parade is expected to be held along Avenue de l’Independance and Arabe Andrinampoinimerina in the capital Antananarivo. The date is also a public holiday and is typically observed with festivals and other commemorative events.

A heightened security presence is also expected across Madagascar and large gatherings are likely. Business, commercial, and transportation disruptions are expected.

The country’s written history begins in the 7th century when Omani Arabs established several trading posts on the island and introduced Islam, the Arabic script and elements of Arab culture. Although Omani immigrants were few in number compared to the native population (Bantus and Austronesians), they left a lasting impression on Madagascar.
