4000 Athletes Present In Tokyo For XVIth Paralympic Games

Must Read

The Paralympic Games began Tuesday, August 24 and will end on September 5. On the menu, 22 sports for 530 events. More than 4.000 athletes will be present in Tokyo for these XVIth Paralympic Games.

More than 160 nations will compete to win the medal table. Among the 22 sports, there are more classic disciplines than others. On the other hand, some lesser-known sports will make their appearance in the eyes of the general public during these Paralympic Games.

Among these little-known disciplines, we find boccia. The tenth time this sport has been played at the Paralympic Games, boccia is similar to petanque played indoors with leather balls. This discipline is played in wheelchairs and can be played individually or in teams.

Goalball, a derivative of soccer, is also little known to the public. Participation is reserved for visually impaired players. The two teams are composed of three players and the objective is to score a goal against the opponent by throwing a sound ball by hand at ground level.

Twenty other sports are also present during these Paralympic Games: athletics is also present with many events including club throwing. In addition to athletics: rowing, parabadminton, basketball, canoe-sprint, cycling, dynamophily, horseback riding, fencing, 5-a-side soccer, judo, swimming, rugby, taekwondo, tennis, table tennis, shooting, archery, triathlon and volleyball.
