Madagascar is set to receive some 400,000 doses of Pfizer vaccine this week. A statement confirmed by the Ministry of Health of Madagascar.
Vaccination campaigns have been slow in Madagascar.
The country faces reluctance from large majority of its 24 million population to take the jab. Authorities are nevertheless confident of at least proving a million dose by the end of this year and at least 50% of the population to get vaccinated by 2023.
The country has not imposed vaccination passports.
COVID-19 infections are increasing in Madagascar, with 57 new infections reported on average each day. That’s 9% of the peak — the highest daily average reported on April 21.
There have been infections and coronavirus-related deaths reported in the country since the pandemic began.
Last week, Andry Rajoelina announced that just over 406,000 people have been fully vaccinated. These figures are far from the government’s objective, which plans to vaccinate about one million Malagasy over the age of 18 this year. Indeed, despite the availability of vaccines, a strong majority of the population is still reluctant to be vaccinated.
