2022: The Year Of The Tiger Will Mark Unforeseen Changes And Opportunities

Must Read

The Chinese New Year, or Lunar New Year, will take place on Tuesday, February 1, 2022. An event that does not fall on the same date every year. Indeed, the Chinese New Year is always celebrated on the first day of the first month of the traditional Chinese calendar.

It is a lunisolar calendar, based on the cycle of the Sun and the phases of the moon, quite different from the Gregorian calendar. Thus, the date changes from one year to another, but falls between January 21 and February 19. In 2023, the Chinese New Year will be celebrated on January 22.

2022: the Year of the Tiger

According to Chinese astrology, 2022 will be the year of the Water Tiger, whereas 2021 was the year of the Metal Buffalo. The Tiger implies movement, rebellion and risk. Unexpected changes and opportunities will mark this new year.

In the Chinese calendar, each year is associated with one of the 12 signs of the Zodiac (Rat, Buffalo, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, Pig). It is also linked to an element: Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water. The combination of sign and element has an influence on one’s character, fortune and daily life, according to beliefs.

What are the traditions for Chinese New Year?

Chinese New Year is celebrated with great pomp and circumstance. And while the festivities peak on February 1, 2022 to mark the transition to the new year, the New Year continues for several days.

What are the traditions?

All buildings are decorated in red. Chinese lanterns are hung everywhere. The New Year’s Eve meal is an opportunity for families to gather around traditional dishes (ravioli, rice cakes, etc.). After the meal, small red envelopes containing money, the “hong-bao” are given to children. Then, firecrackers and fireworks are lit.

On Chinese New Year’s Day, children go to their elders to pay their respects, while the streets are animated by the lion and dragon dance, accompanied by music and other performances. The festivities continue until 15 days later with the Lantern Festival.

Where to celebrate Chinese New Year?

Unfortunately, because of the Covid-19 epidemic, the celebration will be in family. Some activities will be maintained, including 5 exhibitions of painting, photography and ink drawing: a small consolation prize for families already deprived of a parade in 2021.
